Our Story

Near drowning creates new local business

Pool owners must keep in mind drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death among children under age 5, after motor vehicle incidents. Every year 250 children nation wide drown and 1600 are hospitalized for water immersion, according to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.

Two years ago we very nearly lost our son to drowning in our pool. Petria, my wife, and myself know first-hand the horrors of this type of tragedy. On the morning of August 8, 2003, Petria and our two children went out the back door of the house for chores. Taylor, age 2, while playing on a picnic table fell off backwards on his head and rolled into the in-ground pool.

Petria immediately noticed he was missing from his play spot and looked everywhere except in the pool. She went into the house to search and then saw Taylor face down in the bottom of the deep end. Petria jumped in and pulled him out, unconscious and not breathing. Neighbor’s heard Petria’s screams for help and performed CPR.

We very fortunate to have had a happy ending as Taylor survived to be a normal youngster. The suddenness of this type of accident and the presumed results were devastating to the family as he spent two days in the hospital.

Supervision is always the primary layer of protection, but there were no other back-up layers. As a pool owner, you can get fooled in believing your pool is safe.

We now have instituted layers of protection as "fail safe" as possible, in preparing our pool for summers use. We have pool rules that won't be compromised, high door and gate locks with entry alarms, a pool motion alarm and a pool fence that separates the pool from the home and all access entrances. American Red Cross CPR classes were a must.

We called many of the local pool shops and fence companies but could not find a quality pool fence supplier for the area. Searching the Internet led us to Life Saver Pool Fence Systems.

Extensive research showed us that the company is committed to child safety and has a superior fence to the competition. But Life Saver had no one in the area to install it.  After a thorough training program, we became the Life Saver Dealers for our area – a unique and special service designed for those who have infants and toddlers in homes with swimming pools. We now can make a potentially dangerous swimming pool into a very safe and sound home for the entire family.
