I am a mother
of two and since 1998 I have been dealing with a young child
who got out of my sight in the blink of an eye. It was an average
day in Florida, 1998. My husband and I just moved down to the
Sarasota area into a house, like every other Florida home, with a pool.
We had owned a pool up North for seven years prior to February 1998.
My older son had gone to school while my younger son and myself had a play
date and then went home for lunch. Our home, I thought at the time,
was childproofed. We had a security system as well as a floating
pool alarm. While I was preparing macaroni and cheese with fruit
for his lunch I heard the door
alarm go off. My first thought was the pool. I found my
child in his Little Tykes car on the bottom of the pool at the deep
end just sitting and staring at me. The floating alarm did not go
off!! I dove in and could not get him out of the car so I proceeded
to pull up both the car and my baby. Only by the grace of God did I
have the strength to pull him up--the
car had already filled with water.
After doing a chest compression he sputtered out some water and
was thankfully fine. To this
day, two and a half years later, he will not go to a swim instructor or
put his face in the water. This trauma and other stories I have
heard about drowning incidents and the lucky ones like myself has caused
me to be an advocate for pool safety. I have since moved back home
up North and I have launched a campaign/business with my parents to bring
a community awareness to aquatic safety and provide the best in safety
