U.S. Drowning Stats for August 2018
As you’ll notice, these statistics specify the number of drowning deaths in the United States throughout the month of August in 2018. This helpful chart also compares these the drowning stats for August 2018 to other years.
It focuses on four key groups affected by drowning:
- Children aged four and younger
- Children aged 12 and under
- Teenagers
- Adults, meaning anyone older than teens

As you have probably noticed, excellent progress was made between 2017 and 2018. As a nation, the number of drowning deaths has dropped significantly. Across the land, the deaths in August have decreased from 311 to 251. That’s a major drop. In fact, all figures represented here have dropped when compared to the previous 10 years.

While it’s too early to tell, we sincerely hope that the reason for this decrease is due to education and awareness programs. Parents who take a more active roll in water safety can have a major impact on pool safety.
Where Do These Stats Come From?
As we mentioned earlier, these drowning stats for August 2018 come directly from USA Swimming. This organization is the national governing body for competitive swimming in the United States. It is an extension of the United States Olympic Committee. In fact, the organization is charged with selecting the United States Olympic Swimming team and any other teams that officially represent the nation.
Above all else, USA Swimming sets the rules for competitive swimming in the United States. It employs coaches and helps to promote safe swimming.
